Supporting Food Literacy and Healthy Food Choices

Research

Working with NHS Dr Rhiannon Day-Thompson, we approached Camborne Science & International Academy about a growing problem: teenagers eat more ultra-processed food (UPF) than any other age group. To tackle this issue we designed a whole-school intervention, built on habit-formation and nudge psychology, to shift pupil's diets toward real food.

    Outcomes

In March 2026, sixteen BA Creative Advertising and Marketing Communications students went to CSIA to carry out primary research which included observations of the environment and mega focus groups to gain insights and develop ideas. In April the students pitched their ideas to a panel, and Jessica Toze's 'Get Real Food' idea was chosen.

In the summer Dr Rhiannon Day-Thompson and Be Good's Lucy Cokes led a 5-week immersive programme grounded in proven behaviour change theory and tailored specifically for school communities based on Jess's idea. The programme went live in September 2026 and included:

    1. Weekly Tutor Materials
Ready-to-use educational resources for weekly tutorials.

    2. Whole-School Artwork
Vibrant weekly themed posters for display around the school.

    3. Real Food Passports
A personal A6 passport for every pupil to record their progress.

    4. Stamp Challenge & Feast
Tutor group leader boards and a celebratory Harvest Feast for the winners.

This project was a pilot and we are now looking to expand the initiative into a full research study for September 2027. We are currently gathering expressions of interest from secondary schools across the region. We will also be publishing the results of our pilot soon.
